| Details of property for sale |
This property was built in 1846 as a National School, and served as such for over one hundred years before being closed down in the 1950s. In 1978, a local architect saw the potential of the building and redesigned it into a unique home for his family.
Sitting in a picturesque valley in the rolling Leicestershire countryside, Twyford lies within the boundaries of both the Quorn and Cottesmore hunts; a farming village. It lies within easy distance of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, Oakham in Rutland and Leicester itself, with the area's excellent road system putting it within easy reach of many others.
A Grade II listed building, the Old School retains many of its original features, wood panelling, windows and doors. It does, however, have all of the features one would expect from a modern family dwelling with the bonus of an indoor "Endless" swimming pool.
The former primary school converted in the 1980's features double height spaces, impressive scissor beams, exposed rafters, original oak panelled doors and stone mullioned windows with diamond paned glazing.
The accommodation comprises an entrance hall, open plan, kitchen / dining / living room with a mezzanine lounge above, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It has full, gas central heating, double-glazing to Velux windows and secondary glazing to the original stone mullioned windows.
The oak, front entrance door leads into the double height space of the hall. An exposed timber stairs leads to the first floor balcony and upper floor rooms.
The hall has an oak boarded floor, and timber panelling.
The exposed timber panelled door from the hall leads into the heart of the house, an open plan living room containing kitchen, dining and living areas. The full volume of the original school can be seen in the living room with views of the double height space and magnificent scissor beams supporting the steeply pitched roof
A lounge mezzanine floor constructed from exposed pine joists cantilevers over the kitchen dining and living areas.
The kitchen floor is ceramic tiled with pine kitchen units and tiled worktops. An island work surface serves as preparation space and an informal dining bar. The remainder of the floor is oak boarded with exposed brickwork and original plaster finish to other walls.
An original oak panelled door leads out to the utility room and swimming pool and a south facing stained glass window now occupies the place of a porched entrance
Two bedrooms and a bathroom complete the ground floor accommodation. The bathroom comprising bath, wc, shower, bidet and basin has a ceramic tiled floor and fully tiled walls and a pine boarded ceiling. The bedrooms have exposed pine joists with a boarded ceiling
The first floor lounge, situated in the upper volume of the original school room overlooks the living area and has views to the outside via the large stone mullioned window of the space below and Velux windows to the other aspect. The main features of the room are the magnificent scissor beams and rafters, a varnished exposed pine boarded floor, a wood burning stove and the timber balcony overlooking the space below.
The spacious third bedroom situated on the first floor again features a scissor beam and exposed rafters, and a wood-burning stove. A second bathroom containing bath, w.c. and basin is situated alongside.
The utility room contains the central heating boiler and connections for washing machine and electrical appliances in addition to the extensive storage area.
The heated “Endless” swimming pool is situated in a tiled room with panoramic double glazed windows. Walls have been extensively insulated to minimise heat loss and prevent condensation. This is the perfect, economical pool for both relaxed swimming and fitness training with the water flow being infinitely controllable for all occasions.
The compact manageable private garden has patio areas, grassed and planted areas and is a superb morning to afternoon sun trap.
To the side of the property has a drive with parking space for 3 to 4 cars.
A rare opportuntity to live in a unique home in the centre of a village surrounded by beautiful countryside.
